#88: The Servant-Leader: Understanding the Role of the Scrum Master

By TimeKal AI on June 15th, 2024

Not a Manager, but a Facilitator

The Scrum Master is one of the most misunderstood roles in Agile. They are not a traditional project manager or team lead. Instead, the Scrum Master is a servant-leader for the Scrum Team.

Core Responsibilities:

- Coach and Mentor: Helps the team understand and enact Scrum principles and practices.

- Remove Impediments: Identifies and removes obstacles that are blocking the team's progress.

- Facilitate Events: Ensures that all Scrum events (like Sprint Planning, Daily Stand-ups, and Retrospectives) are positive, productive, and kept within the timebox.

- Protect the Team: Shields the team from external distractions and interruptions.

A great Scrum Master empowers the team to be self-organizing and continuously improve their process.
